Chapter Two

"Tira, Tira," my mother called, "where did you run off to, child?"

I heard her footsteps crunching on the fallen twigs and saw a look of surprise flash across her face when she saw me sitting next to Phantom.  I hoped it wasn’t fear hiding behind her eyes.  Phantom was a good, kind man and deserved our respect.  "I’m right here, mama.  Phantom and I were just having a nice afternoon chat."

"Well, I hope you weren’t bothering him," she said, taking a shallow breathe.  "It is time for us to be going, though.  It will be dark soon and Arbellason will be worried if we aren’t home."

"Okay mama.  It was nice talking to you Phantom," I said, bowing my head slightly, "I hope we can chat again sometime."

"Anytime you wish, Tira.  I’d be happy to have you keep me company any afternoon," Phantom said, returning my bow.  "Thank you Cuiledwhen, for be so kind to my wife, she has missed talking to other elves."

"She is lovely and I enjoyed my time with her immensely, we will be sure to stop by again in a few weeks."

"That will be wonderful, I know both of us will look forward to the visit.  Please let me walk to the front path."

The three of us meandered our way around clucking hens to the dirt path.  Faye was standing in the doorway, her face was pale and sweat was trickling down her cheeks.  Phantom glanced over his shoulder at her and ran to her side, Cuiledwhen followed closely behind him.

"Faye, baby, what’s wrong," Phantom asked.  "You look awful."

"I…I…I don’t know.  Everything was fine, but when I stood up to wave goodbye, I suddenly felt a sharp pain in my stomach.  The pain isn’t stopping, either."

"Oh my goodness, your in labor," Cuiledwhen said, grabbing Faye’s arm.  "Quick bring her to the bedroom, we need to lie her down.  Tira, I need you to run home and tell Arbellason that I need him here. He is a birthing expert."

"Are you sure he will come," I said, my voice laced with doubt.

"He will come, he owes it to Faye.  I want you to wait for us at home and make sure to tell Artemis where we are."

"But mama, I…."

"You will do as instructed, now get a move on.  We don’t have much time."

  1. Oooh! Baby on the way… and not just any baby, a human/elf baby. This ought to be interesting! Faye is so cute; she’s got one of my favorite of Enayla’s skins.

Tira is pretty wise for such a young kid. But I guess the circumstances surrounding her childhood and whatnot would cause some quick growing up on her part.

  2. ooooh a baby! How exciting! And for a “Phantom” he doesn’t seem too dark and mysterious. No wonder Faye fell for him–he’s quite good-looking! :D haha

I wonder if Arbellason will actually come and help the birthing–that should be interesting.

  6. Tira’s such a sweety, and wise beyond her years too. I hope Arbellason hustles over there & gets past his bigotry! Yes, we do like Phantom!

  10. I hope that Tira is able to overcome the prejudice of her family and can see others for who they are inside and not just what they are. Phantom seems like a good place to start. I can’t wait to see the baby.

  11. More please! I’m so glad that Tira isn’t as judgmental as the adults in her life.

  12. Whew, dad sure doesn’t like humans at all! (Not that I can blame him, but he should adjust to changing times.) Good for Cuiledwhen, teaching her daughter not to judge people by their race, but to get to know them as individuals first. Faye is a very pretty elf! And I love her gown!! Wow, Faye get up a lot to be with Phantom. I hope he does make her happy, no matter how rude their neighbors are when the come to visit. Hmm, I agree with Tira. I hope it wasn’t fear her mom was showing, because then she’s not listening to what she told her daughter, to judge people as individuals. Ooo, the first halfbreed baby is about to be born! *cheers*
