Chapter Two

With those words still hanging in the kitchen, I banged threw the front door and out into the shinning sun.  The Solbars’ didn’t have as much land as my father, but there was still plenty for me to explore.  I walked toward the chicken coupe with the intentions of playing with the hens, but I heard a rustling coming from behind the house.

"Darn shoddy tools," a deep voice thundered, "I will never get my work done at this rate."

I peered around the corner and stared at the large figure digging in the dirt.  Old, worn garden tools were scattered around his knees and his clothes were stained a muddy, brown.  He was Phantom.  He was light of skin, but heavy of muscle and I could see power lying underneath his clothes.  Suddenly, he turned and stared directly at me, a scowl painted on his face.  I inhaled a sharp breathe and prepared to run back to the front of the house, when he stood and smiled broadly.

"And who are you child," he said in a quiet, soothing voice.

"My name sir, is Tira, I came here with my mother, to bring goodies to Faye," I said, stepping closer to him.  "My father is Arbellason and we live a few miles down the northern tree line."

"Ah yes, I know of your family," Phantom said, brushing away the dirt on his knees.  "Faye has told me much about the other inhabitants of this island.  I’m sure she is pleased that your mother came to pay her a pleasant visit."

"Other’s have been unpleasant to you?"

"Not outwardly, no, but we know that our presence here has caused some discomfort among the other members of the clan.  This is all that is left of Faye’s past, though and she wishes to hold on to as much of it as she can.  I will not allow her heart to be broken again, so we will remain here."

His frankness surprised me, very few adults ever addressed me as an equal.  My heart warmed to him in that instant, "I’m sorry to hear that you have received such unjust treatment.  I want you to know that not all elves will judge you so harshly."

"You seem quite knowledgeable, child.  I am glad to have made your acquaintance."

"I am glad as well, but I am not a child.  I will be approaching my courting years soon."

"Courting, huh," Phantom said with a smile, "you are looking forward to finding a husband?"

"Not really, but it is expected of me to find one.  How did Faye come to meet you?"

"It is a long story, young Tira and one that ended with great sadness," Phantom said.  "She found me hiding in her family’s barn, I had been chased there by my brothers and was in great need of some kindness.  She showed me love and tenderness I had never seen before, I fell for her instantly.  I never wanted to leave her side, but she warned me that a human would never be accepted in her world.  To her family, I would be nothing but trouble and they would never allow her to be with me."

"But she loved you and our elven codes give great importance to true love."

"Yes they do, but not when one is in love with the enemy.  Faye went against the wishes of her family and the royal court, she decided that she wanted to be with me at any cost.  Her family disowned her and the elven society stripped her of her titles, but she no longer cared about the shackles of royalty.  She wanted to live her life with me and I promised to make her as happy as I could."

I felt tears form in the back of my eyes, the two of them had done nothing more then fallen in love, yet they’d been treated like criminals in our society.  My heart ached for them.  "What our leaders did wasn’t fair to either of you, all the two of you did was fall in love."

"Humans in the outer villages hated your kind, Tira.  I can understand why your leaders didn’t trust me.  They were just trying to keep your society safe."

"The choice that they made Faye make was still unfair.  How was she ever supposed to choose between her family and her true love, no one should ever have to make a decision like that."

"I agree with you," Phantom said with a soft sigh, "but now her family is gone and we are just trying to rebuild our lives.  Forget the past and move forward."

  1. Oooh! Baby on the way… and not just any baby, a human/elf baby. This ought to be interesting! Faye is so cute; she’s got one of my favorite of Enayla’s skins.

Tira is pretty wise for such a young kid. But I guess the circumstances surrounding her childhood and whatnot would cause some quick growing up on her part.

  2. ooooh a baby! How exciting! And for a “Phantom” he doesn’t seem too dark and mysterious. No wonder Faye fell for him–he’s quite good-looking! :D haha

I wonder if Arbellason will actually come and help the birthing–that should be interesting.

  10. I hope that Tira is able to overcome the prejudice of her family and can see others for who they are inside and not just what they are. Phantom seems like a good place to start. I can’t wait to see the baby.

  11. More please! I’m so glad that Tira isn’t as judgmental as the adults in her life.

  12. Whew, dad sure doesn’t like humans at all! (Not that I can blame him, but he should adjust to changing times.) Good for Cuiledwhen, teaching her daughter not to judge people by their race, but to get to know them as individuals first. Faye is a very pretty elf! And I love her gown!! Wow, Faye get up a lot to be with Phantom. I hope he does make her happy, no matter how rude their neighbors are when the come to visit. Hmm, I agree with Tira. I hope it wasn’t fear her mom was showing, because then she’s not listening to what she told her daughter, to judge people as individuals. Ooo, the first halfbreed baby is about to be born! *cheers*
